To Tell the Truth

Just recently, there has been a reboot of the popular TV show “To Tell The Truth.” The premise of the show is that three contestants try to fool a panel of celebrities by either telling the truth or lying. One of the contestants has done something newsworthy, and the other two are imposters. Their job is to lie to the celebrities while the real person tells the truth. At the end of the show, the real contestant reveals himself to the panel after they have made their choices of who they think is telling the truth.

While the idea of the show seems harmless enough, you can’t help but wonder about a TV show that promotes lying and deception. In our society today, it appears that more people are interested in lying about things than telling the truth. We have many who twist the truth or tell half-truths in order to deceive us. It is interesting that we have become so used to the lying that we think nothing of people who stand before us and flat out lie to us. It has permeated our society so much that we no longer trust anyone when he/she reveals something to us. Politicians, news anchors, friends, and yes, even “so-called preachers of the gospel,” think nothing about looking us in the face and lying to us. With so much of this type of behavior going on, how do we know who to trust? How do we know which persons to whom we should listen when they are speaking to us?

Is there one source of truth that stands out in a world that seems to put so much emphasis on lying and deception? Is there one source of truth that we can trust will never lie to us? Yes, there is one source of truth that will always speak the truth and will never lie to us. That source is, of course, JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. In Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the account of the transfiguration is given to us. In Luke 9:28-35, we read in verse 35, “Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One, listen to Him.” In John 14:6, Jesus answers and says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no once comes to the Father but through Me.”  In the book of Psalms in chapter 119 and verse 100 we read, “The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of your righteous ordinances is everlasting.” The Word of God is the truth and those who speak of the Word of God truthfully should be praised. Paul wrote in Galatians 4:16, “Have I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth.?”

The Book of Proverbs tell us that one of the things that God hates is “a lying tongue.”  Revelation tell us that among those who are outside the gates of Heaven are those ”who love and practice lying.”  When we become discouraged and don’t know who is telling the truth, turn to the Word of God and find honesty, truthfulness, and genuineness in it. Look to Jesus Christ, read His Words, pray, and know that you are not being deceived or lied to in any way. Trust in Him, hope in Him, and place your confidence in the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
