The Doctor Is In!

“THE DOCTOR IS IN!”

Unless you have been hiding in a cave for the last year and a half, you know that we have been in the throes of a world-wide pandemic. Millions of people have died as a result of this horrible illness that has swept over the world, and countless others are suffering from the long-term effects of it. Now a great debate arises as to whether or not one should take the vaccine that has been developed to combat the virus or not. It is obvious that there are vaccines available for just about anything. Children receive shots for diseases like measles, chickenpox, diphtheria, polio, and a multitude of other illnesses. Adults can be vaccinated against many other diseases like shingles, flu, or pneumonia. With all of the drugs and antibiotics that are available to us, we seem to be a country that is seriously focused on our physical health and disease prevention. Can you remember a time when these were not available?

Can you imagine what it would have been like to live in the time of Jesus and the apostles, a time when Jesus touched a leper and healed him?  What about that paralytic that Jesus told to take up his bed and walk? What if you had been Jairus and watched as Jesus took your daughter’s hand and brought her back to life? Could you imagine being the woman with an infirmity for 12 years and just touching  the hem of Jesus’ garment healed you of your infirmity? What if you had been the nobleman whose son was healed by Jesus when the Lord was in Cana and the boy in Capernaum?

Truly, the Great Physician had come! There was no physical illness or disease that Jesus did not have power over which is why people were coming to Him to be healed. In Mark 2:17, Jesus said, “Those who are well have no need

Truly, the Great Physician had come! There was no physical illness or disease that Jesus did not have power over which is why people were coming to Him to be healed. In Mark 2:17, Jesus said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”  However, the power of Jesus to heal physically was only used to draw people to Him for an even greater healing power. As we finish reading the rest of Mark 2:17, Jesus goes on to say, “I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” By healing the sick, Jesus was calling sinners to be healed from an even greater sickness. He was calling them to be healed of their sins. Sin is the great sickness that will condemn our souls to eternal punishment if not cured by the Great Physician.

In our song books is a song entitled, “There’s Not a Friend Like the Lowly Jesus.” In the second part of the first verse, we sing “None else could heal all our soul’s diseases, No, not one! No, not one!” We have all suffered or will suffer various diseases and afflictions in our lives, but there is no greater sickness than sin infecting our souls. No vaccines, antibiotics, or over-the-counter drugs will fix it. Only the Great Physician can take our sin afflicted souls and wash them white as snow with His saving blood. Have you taken advantage of the soul-cleansing blood that can wash away your sins? Do you meet regularly with the Great Physician for checkups? The Great Physician is always in and ready to help? Will you let Him? of a physician, but those who are sick.”  However, the power of Jesus to heal physically was only used to draw people to Him for an even greater healing power.
