Did You Take Time to Reflect?

“DID YOU TAKE TIME TO REFLECT?”

When you woke up on Thursday morning to eight, nine, or ten inches of snow, did you take the time to reflect upon the beauty of God’s handiwork? What were your first thoughts as you looked out the window on the pristine snow that had fallen through the night? Did you notice the beautiful curves and shapes of the snow drifts? Did you look at the bushes and trees covered in snow or the glistening from the ice on them? Did you marvel at the quiet and calmness after the storm as you stepped outside?  Did you immediately begin to complain about shoveling snow, slippery roads, icy conditions, and being stuck at home?

The beauty of the newly fallen snow before man begins plowing and shoveling reminds us of the power of our Creator. In Job 37:6, we are told, “For He says to the snow, “Fall on the earth; Likewise ,to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.”  Our Creator controls the elements and commands them as he wishes. In Job 38:22, God speaks to Job, and asks, “Have you entered the treasury of snow, or have you seen the treasury of hail?”  God in His power and might has snow and hail set aside for His use when needed.

The purity of the newly fallen snow reminds us of our need to be cleansed from our sins and be pure as the snow. In Psalm 51:7, we read, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” In the book of Isaiah, we read, “Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

The brightness of the sunlight reflecting off the snow reminds us of the glory of Heaven and the heavenly beings that are there. In Daniel 7:9, we read, “I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool.” The angel who was at the tomb of Christ is described in Matthew 28:3 as having “a countenance that was like lightning and clothing as white as snow.” At the transfiguration, Mark writes in chapter 9:3, “His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them.”  John writes of the One amongst the lampstands in Revelation 1:14 stating, “His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow.”

It is always good to look upon God’s creation and reflect upon the different meanings that it can have in our lives. So, during the next snowfall, try to spend a few minutes appreciating the beauty of the snow and the different meanings found in God’s Word.
