Never Forget

NEVER FORGET

Today is September 11th. Do you remember what you were doing twenty-one years ago on September 11th? Yard signs have popped up around town reminding us to “never forget” September 11, 2001. The events of that day and the events in my personal life that day will never be forgotten.  Yet, isn’t it amazing that many of our congregation were only a few years old or not even born in 2001? As you think back over your life, I am sure there are events that you will “never forget.” Many of us remember where we were when Neil Armstrong took those first steps on the moon. Several here were not even born when that happened. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when news came that President Kennedy had been assassinated. Many here know only about it from watching programs about it. There are some in our congregation that remember December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. A great many here did not experience that tragic event. We even have a few members who experienced the “Great Depression.”

While these events I have mentioned are mostly of the tragic nature, I am sure there are many joyous occasions in your lives. We will never forget our weddings or the births of our children and grandchildren or our graduations as well as our children’s graduations.

As we reflect upon September 11, 2001, we must “never forget” the joy we felt on the day of our baptism. Three recent baptisms of young people in our congregation should bring to mind our own baptisms, a time to remember that Jesus Christ died upon the cruel cross so you and I might have the hope of salvation. We must “never forget” that God gave all mankind the opportunity to be saved from his sins. God implemented His plan of salvation, His scheme of redemption, because of His great love for His creation. God reminded the children of Israel to “never forget” the great miracles that He performed in freeing them from captivity in Egypt. Later, in captivity in Assyria and Babylon, God said “never forget.”

While some in our land want to erase our history and rewrite it to their benefit, the fact remains that 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ walked upon the earth. Jesus left the beauty and glory of Heaven to come to be a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus taught, He performed miracles, and He died for us. Many have tried for centuries to eradicate the Word of God, but it still remains to this day.

“Never forget” the important events that have happened in your lives. Most importantly, “never forget” that you have a Savior who died for you so you might be with Him in glory someday. We look forward to His second coming, the Greatest Event of All Time.
