6 Things Every Child Should Be Taught
“SIX THINGS EVERY CHILD SHOULD BE TAUGHT!”
In Proverbs 22:6, we read, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” As parents, we should focus on Instruction (Ephesians 6:4), Encouragement (Colossians 3:20-21), and Discipline (Ephesians 6:4). Godly parents should be good role models for their children. They should make sure their children are learning and growing in all aspects of life. Spiritual matters are extremely important when eternity is considered.
The following are six things that parents should be teaching their children:
Teach them that they are made in the image of God. They need to know they are the result of intelligent design and eternal purpose. They are not a by-product of a chance combination of evolutionary circumstances. They need to know they are the “offspring of God” (Acts 17:28). Take time to read Genesis 1 and 2 with your children.
Teach them that the Bible is the Word of God. Shelves are filled with books no one has read. (Ecclesiastes 12:12). The Bible should be read and is God’s instructions and commandments to us about both earthly life and eternal life. They are not suggestions. Read God’s Word and “hide it in your heart” (Psalm 119:11).
Teach them that there are wicked people in the world. The Bible warns us about evil companions. (I Corinthians 15:33) Children are very trusting as they grow up, and it hurts us as parents to see them hurt by others. Teach them to choose their friends wisely and carefully.
They should give their friends plenty of time and opportunity to prove themselves worthy of their trust before they rely on them.
Teach them that God hates divorce. (Malachi 2:16) Divorce impacts children, parents, spouses, friends, the church, and the nation. Marriage requires a total commitment on the part of both spouses. God always intended one man and one woman in marriage. (Genesis 2:24)
Teach them there is only one church. Jesus died in order to purchase His church (Acts 20:28). We are told by society to “Join the church of your choice.” Where in God’s Word does it mention a choice? All who are saved, He has added to it. (Acts 2:47)
Teach them that Sin is black, Hell is hot, and Eternity is forever. God will punish sin. Remember those in the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, and Uzzah. There is no such thing as a little sin. (I John 1:6-10.) Hell is not a fairy tale. (Mark 9:44-48)
Your children will need to be taught many things as they grow. Shouldn’t you and the church be the ones that are doing this? Are you bringing them to Bible classes and services? Are you training them in the ways of the Lord?
